Protecting your home from the ground up: A guide to California’s Zone Zero.

If you own a home in California's fire hazard area, you've likely heard the term: Zone Zero.

While homeowners have long managed vegetation within 100 feet of their property, state regulations are now tightening the focus on the most critical area-the first 5 feet.

What is Zone Zero?

In California, Zone Zero (or the “Ember-Resistant Zone”) is the critical 0-5 foot area immediately surrounding your home or structure.
Established by assembly bill 3074, this zone is designed to prevent wind blown embers-the leading cause of home loss in wildfires-from igniting materials directly against your house. Zone Zero went into effect for new construction February 2026 and will be in effect for existing homes February 2027 so there is still time to get in compliance before it’s too late.
